Frequently asked

Questions about Leeuwenbosch Country House

What's included in the rate?

Accommodation in one of four en-suite bedrooms (Luxury Suite, Family Room, or Two-Bedroom Family Suite), breakfast, lunch and dinner, selected house beverages, two game drives daily with professional guides, and Wi-Fi throughout (with download limit). Premium drinks and private bush dinners are billed separately. A conservation levy of R125 per adult and R75 per child under 12 per night is added at check-out.

Are children welcome at Leeuwenbosch?

Yes — children of all ages are welcome. Children aged 0 to 2 stay free; children and teens aged 3 to 11 are charged at 50% of the adult rate. The Two-Bedroom Family Suite sleeps four (typically 2 adults + 2 children) and the Fowlds family has welcomed multi-generational guests for five generations.

What's the history of Leeuwenbosch?

Leeuwenbosch is the gracious 1908 Settler home of the Fowlds family, steeped in the history of the South African Eastern Cape Frontier. The Fowlds family has been here for five generations and the homestead has been thoughtfully converted into an eight-bed game lodge while keeping its character — antiques, historical paintings, a 19th-century stone chapel on the property, and a convivial stone-walled cellar bar.

How do I get to Leeuwenbosch?

Leeuwenbosch is approximately 40 minutes' drive from Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), via the N2 towards Grahamstown. About 50 km out, keep left on the N2 — then travel a further 13 km, following the Amakhala Game Reserve road signs. The lodge will share door-to-door directions on confirmation. Airport transfers can be arranged through African Safari Group on request.

What activities are included?

Two daily game drives are included (morning and afternoon) on open 4x4 vehicles with a professional guide, plus walks and Bushman's River cruises. Between activities, guests can sit in the 19th-century stone chapel on the property, take high tea on the shaded verandah, or settle into the stone-walled cellar bar in the evening. Five generations of family heritage stories are part of the package.

What is the Conservation Levy?

Amakhala applies a Conservation Levy of R125 per adult per night and R75 per child under 12 per night (effective from reservations made 1 March 2018 with check-in from 1 April 2018). The levy is charged separately at check-out and supports anti-poaching measures on the reserve.

What is the cancellation policy?

60+ days before arrival — no forfeit. 46 to 60 days — 10% of deposit forfeited. 31 to 45 days — 50% of deposit forfeited. 3 to 30 days — 75% of deposit forfeited. 2 days or less — 100% of deposit forfeited.
